What does it mean for employers and workers in Ontario?

On October 23, 2018, the Ford government tabled Bill 47, which will repeal most of Bill 148’s reforms.  Bill 47 has rolled back many of the progressive innovations to the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (“ESA”) put in place to Ontario’s most vulnerable workers.  Bill 47 has also made various changes to the Labour Relations Act, 1995 (“LRA”).

Bill 148 attempted to advance the rights of workers.  Bill 47 is a step back for workers and clearly favours the protection and rights of employers.  It also reduces the fines for non-compliance for employers.
